Preparing for Middle School
Starting middle school can be an exciting time for students transitioning from elementary school. By definition, transition means the change from one place, state of being, or condition to another place, state of being, or condition. This transition is often complex.
As young adolescents are changing school buildings they are also changing hormonally, mentally, and physically. This transition affects young adolescents’ academic experiences, motivation, self-perception, and self-regulation. This process also affects parents and teachers.
Effective transition programs help students move to a new school and become a part of the new school. With the implementation of transition programs and the support of parents, teachers, administrators, and mental health professionals, this transition can positively impact students both socially and academically.
School Lockers
Middle school students have lockers. To ensure the safety of your student's belongings and privacy, it is essential that locker combinations are not traded and lockers are not shared. Student cell phones are to be stored in the locker during school hours; student use of cellphones during the school day is not permitted. Lockers can be searched at any time by school administration if there is a reasonable suspicion for searching, per federal law.
Cell Phones
Students are able to use school phones for emergencies. We only recommend cell phones for older students, based on need. Students in middle school are required to keep their phones locked in their lockers. Students are not to use cell phones for any reason during the school day or in the school building or at recess; this is a safety issue that limits opportunities for sexual harassment, on-line bullying, and trafficking. This includes on field trips, etc. Once school is dismissed students may use cell phones outside of our building. Cell phones being used improperly will be taken and returned only to the parent. Please note that the school cannot replace lost or stolen cell phones.
